Free consultation in Aventura with a free digital panoramic X-ray. Learning & Essentials # Early Treatment Why a first orthodontic check at age seven matters—and why, for many children, the right plan is simply to wait. - First check at age 7 - Free consultation - Aventura, Florida Age seven ## Why seven, and not later? The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic check by age seven. It is early on purpose. By that age, the first permanent molars and incisors have usually erupted, which is enough for us to see how the bite is developing—whether the arches are wide enough, whether the jaws are growing in proportion, and whether there is enough room for the remaining permanent teeth to erupt. Being seen at seven does not mean starting treatment at seven. For most children, the visit ends with a plan to monitor their growth. What it can prevent is discovering at age twelve that a problem has been worsening for several years. ## What early treatmentcan achieve While the jaws are still growing, we can influence how they develop. Once growth is complete, the same corrections may take longer and, in some cases, require surgery. - Creating room for permanent teeth to erupt without crowding - Maintaining space for a permanent tooth that has yet to erupt - Reducing the likelihood that a tooth will need to be extracted later - Lowering the risk of injury to protruding upper front teeth - Guiding jaw growth while the bones are still developing - Potentially making future braces treatment shorter and more straightforward Being straight with you ## It is not forevery child Plenty of children who come in at seven do not need treatment for years. Recommending an unnecessary appliance adds cost and discomfort, so we recommend treatment only when it offers a clear benefit. The value of the visit is the assessment: knowing whether your child needs treatment now or monitoring as they grow. Early treatment is most useful for crossbites, a narrow upper jaw, severe crowding with no room for teeth still to come, upper front teeth that protrude far enough to be injured in a fall, and habits such as thumb sucking that affect bite development. In these cases, waiting can make eventual treatment more difficult. Your consultation is free and includes a free digital panoramic X-ray, so this is a judgement made on evidence rather than a glance. ## Questions parentsask us If we have not covered your question, bring it to your free consultation. We will give you answers specific to your child. Does early treatment mean my child avoids braces later? Not necessarily. By age seven, not all permanent teeth have erupted, so their final positions are not yet established. Early treatment addresses specific developing problems, such as crossbites, jaw-width concerns, or protruding front teeth. It may make later treatment more straightforward, but some children will still need braces or aligners as they grow. How long does early treatment last? It varies depending on what is being corrected. Some appliances achieve the desired correction in a few months, while growth-guidance treatment may take longer. After the examination and X-ray, we will explain the expected timeline and tell you when monitoring is more appropriate than treatment. Will it be uncomfortable for my child? Some tenderness is common during the first few days after an appliance is placed or adjusted. It usually settles quickly, and soft foods can help during that period. Can my child still play sports or a wind instrument? Yes. For contact sports, we will discuss a mouthguard that fits over the appliance. Woodwind and brass players may need a short adjustment period, so please tell us at the consultation and we will consider this when recommending an appliance. Will insurance cover early treatment? Coverage varies by plan, and some policies treat an initial phase differently from a later phase. We will review your coverage and payment options with you at the free consultation before you commit to anything. Orthodontic Options, Aventura, FL. Learning & Essentials # Foods to Avoid Broken brackets can delay treatment, and many occur when patients eat foods that damage brackets or wires. - Five food groups - What to eat instead - Aventura, Florida ## Five groups, andwhy each one bites These guidelines are designed to protect your brackets, wires, and enamel. Avoiding foods that can damage your braces helps keep treatment on track. - Sticky and chewy - Hard and crunchy - Sugary foods and drinks - Tough to bite into - Acidic foods and drinks Group 01 ### Sticky and chewy These pull. A chew that resists your teeth transfers that force straight to the bracket glued to the front of them, and brackets come off. Sticky sugar also lodges around the wire where a brush cannot reach it. - Caramel - Taffy - Gummy candies - Chewy candy bars - Licorice - Fruit roll-ups - Toffee and caramel apples Group 02 ### Hard and crunchy These snap. Biting something harder than the bracket is what bends wires and cracks ceramic — and an unplanned repair visit adds time to your treatment. - Popcorn (and unpopped kernels) - Nuts - Hard candies - Ice cubes - Hard pretzels - Corn chips - Raw carrots - Whole apples Group 03 ### Sugary foods and drinks Braces give sugar somewhere to sit. Decay around a bracket leaves a permanent white mark on the tooth that is still there the day the braces come off, which is a poor reward for two years of work. - Sugary cereals - Caramel, toffee, and nougat fillings - Syrups and honey - Soft drinks - Ice cream with nuts or hard pieces - Sweetened yogurt - Jams and jellies Group 04 ### Tough to bite into The problem is the bite, not the food. Tearing into something with your front teeth levers on the brackets there. Most of these are fine once cut into pieces and chewed at the back. - Tough cuts of meat - Hard pizza crusts - Bagels - Crusty bread - Raw broccoli and celery - Thick or chewy sandwiches Group 05 ### Acidic foods and drinks Acid softens enamel, and enamel around a bracket is already harder to clean. Sipping an acidic drink through the day keeps the teeth under attack for hours rather than minutes. - Soda and carbonated drinks - Energy drinks - Lemonade - Citrus fruits in large quantities - Vinegar-based dressings - Ketchup and salsa ## What to eatinstead The first week after braces go on, and the few days after each adjustment, are when teeth feel tender. These are the easy choices. - Soft breads, pasta, rice, and cooked grains - Yogurt, cheese, milk, and other soft dairy products - Eggs, fish, ground meats, and slow-cooked meats - Cooked vegetables and raw vegetables cut into small pieces - Soft fruits, such as bananas, berries, and melon; sliced apples and pears - Choose water as your everyday drink, especially after eating or drinking something sweet If something does break: it is not an emergency, but do not leave it. Call us on (305) 466-2809 so we can get you in — a loose bracket that waits until the next scheduled visit is a bracket that has stopped moving that tooth. If a wire end is catching, orthodontic wax over it will hold you until you are seen. Free Consultation Includes a free digital panoramic X-ray. Call us or request an appointment any time. Learning & Essentials # Orthodontic Disorders Learn about eight common orthodontic disorders and how they may be treated. - Eight orthodontic conditions explained - Free consultation - Aventura, Florida ## How teeth and jawscome out of line Learn about crowding, spacing, five common bite problems, and the dental midline mismatch that can create an off-center smile—and what treatment may involve for each. Early diagnosis may provide more treatment options. - Crowding - Spacing - Crossbite - Open bite - Overbite - Overjet - Underbite - Unmatched dental midlines Disorder 01 ### Crowding Crowding occurs when the jaw does not have enough room for every tooth to align properly, causing teeth to overlap, rotate, or sit in front of or behind one another. It is a common reason patients ask us about braces. Beyond appearance, crowded teeth can be harder to clean because brushing and flossing may not reach overlapping surfaces effectively. Treatment usually involves creating room through arch expansion, creating small amounts of space between teeth, or, in more severe cases, removing a tooth so the remaining teeth can be aligned. The appropriate approach is determined after an examination and X-ray. Disorder 02 ### Spacing Spacing is the opposite of crowding—gaps may be scattered along the arch or concentrated between the upper front teeth. Spacing may occur when the teeth are small relative to the jaw or when a missing tooth allows adjacent teeth to drift. Some gaps can trap food or make certain areas harder to keep clean. Braces or aligners can close gaps by moving the teeth together and holding them in place. When a tooth is missing, treatment may instead involve creating the correct amount of space for a replacement. Disorder 03 ### Crossbite A crossbite occurs when one or more upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when the mouth is closed. It may affect a single tooth or several teeth and can contribute to uneven tooth wear, gum problems, or asymmetric jaw growth. Treatment depends on whether the crossbite involves the teeth, the jaws, or both, and may include braces, aligners, or a palatal expander. Early evaluation is helpful because some treatments work best while the jaws are still growing. Disorder 04 ### Open bite An open bite occurs when some upper and lower teeth do not meet when the mouth is closed. It may be associated with genetics, prolonged thumb-sucking, tongue posture, or differences in jaw growth. Treatment depends on the cause, the patient’s age, and the severity of the bite. Options may include habit correction, braces, clear aligners, other orthodontic appliances, or, in severe skeletal cases, jaw surgery. Disorder 05 ### Overbite An overbite, also called a deep bite, occurs when the upper front teeth excessively overlap the lower front teeth vertically. Genetics, tooth position, jaw growth, and some oral habits may contribute. A deep bite can cause abnormal tooth wear or irritation of the gums or palate. Treatment is individualized and may include braces, clear aligners, bite-correcting appliances, or, in severe adult cases, jaw surgery. Disorder 06 ### Overjet Overjet occurs when the upper front teeth project too far ahead of the lower front teeth. It may result from tooth position, differences in jaw growth, missing teeth, or habits such as prolonged thumb-sucking. Possible consequences include injury to the protruding front teeth, uneven tooth wear, and strain on the bite. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include braces, clear aligners, elastics, or other orthodontic appliances. Disorder 07 ### Underbite An underbite occurs when the lower front teeth or lower jaw sit in front of the upper front teeth. It may result from tooth position, differences in jaw growth, or a combination of both. An untreated underbite can contribute to difficulty biting and chewing, abnormal tooth wear, speech concerns, or jaw discomfort. Treatment depends on the patient’s age and the severity and cause of the underbite. Options may include braces, clear aligners, growth-guiding appliances for younger patients, or jaw surgery for severe skeletal cases. Disorder 08 ### Unmatched dental midlines The dental midlines are the lines between the two upper front teeth and the two lower front teeth. When they do not align, the smile may appear off-center and, in some cases, the discrepancy may be associated with an uneven bite. Treatment depends on the cause and may involve repositioning teeth with braces or clear aligners. ## Questions we areasked about bites The five questions that come up most often once patients recognize their own bite on this page. Can orthodontic treatment help jaw joint (TMJ) pain? TMJ symptoms can have many possible causes and are not always related to the way your teeth fit together. An evaluation can help identify possible contributing factors and determine whether orthodontic treatment—or a referral to another healthcare provider—is appropriate. Am I too old for braces? No. Teeth can move in response to steady pressure at any age, and many of our patients are adults—our practice treats patients of all ages. Because adult jaws are no longer growing, some corrections that may be straightforward in a child are approached differently in an adult. Can straightening my teeth improve my speech? It can, particularly when a speech difficulty involves the tongue’s position relative to the teeth. An open bite or a large overjet, for example, may make certain sounds harder to form. Improvement is not guaranteed for every speech concern. At your consultation, we can discuss whether treatment is likely to help in your case. Will I need teeth taken out? Not usually. Extractions are considered only when they are needed to achieve healthy alignment and a stable bite. We make this decision with you after an examination and X-ray and explain the available alternatives before you agree to treatment. How long does treatment take? Treatment time depends on what is being corrected and how your teeth respond. After examining your bite and reviewing your X-ray, we can provide an estimated treatment timeline and cost. Every consultation at Orthodontic Options is free and includes a free digital panoramic X-ray, so you can see exactly which of these applies before anything is decided. Treatments # Clear/Ceramic Braces Tooth-coloured brackets for patients who want fixed braces without the metal look — fitted at our Aventura office by four orthodontists, all licensed and certified. - Discreet - Free consultation - Aventura, Florida The discreet fixed option ## What are clear/ceramic braces? Ceramic and tooth-colored braces are made from composite material. They are not as noticeable as metal braces and are an ideal choice for those who are concerned that the braces will affect their looks. The elastic ligatures may stain but these are usually replaced during your monthly visit. Clear braces work exactly like metal ones — a bracket on every tooth, an archwire running through them, light continuous pressure moving each tooth along a planned path. The difference is the bracket itself, which is made from a ceramic or composite material shaded to sit close to your natural tooth colour. At conversational distance they read as a much softer line across the teeth than stainless steel does. The wire is still visible; what disappears is the bright metal square on each tooth. ## Why patients choose clear/ceramic braces Fixed braces do the work; the brackets decide how much of it anyone else notices. ### Much less obvious in person and in photos The bracket takes on your tooth shade rather than contrasting with it, which is why most of our adult patients who want fixed braces ask about this option first. ### The same control as metal braces Nothing about the mechanics changes. Crowding, spacing and bite correction are treated the same way, on the same kind of timeline. ### Ligatures are replaced every visit The small elastics that hold the wire are the part that discolours, and they come off and go back on new at each adjustment. ### Works on the upper arch alone if you prefer Some patients choose clear brackets on the teeth that show when they smile and metal on the lower back teeth, which keeps the cost down. ## What treatment actually involves From the first appointment to the day the braces come off — and the part afterwards that decides whether the result lasts. 1 ### Free consultation We examine your bite and take a free digital panoramic X-ray, then talk through whether clear brackets suit your case — and where they do and do not make a visible difference. 2 ### Fitting day Each tooth is prepared and its bracket bonded in place, then the wire is fitted and held with clear or white ligatures. 3 ### Adjustment visits We change the wire, check progress and fit fresh ligatures. This is the visit that resets any discolouration from the previous few weeks. 4 ### Removal and retainers The brackets are taken off and the teeth polished. Your retainer then holds the corrected position — that part is not optional if you want the result to last. ## FAQs about clear/ceramic braces The questions we are asked most often. Anything not covered here, ask us at your free consultation — it includes a free digital panoramic X-ray. Do clear braces stain? The brackets themselves resist staining. The elastic ligatures around them can pick up colour from coffee, tea, red wine, curries and tomato sauces — and, as the practice notes, those ligatures are usually replaced at your monthly visit, so any discolouration is temporary rather than permanent. Are they more fragile than metal? Ceramic is more brittle than stainless steel, so we are more careful about hard foods with these. Cut firm items into pieces and keep away from ice and hard sweets and breakages are uncommon. Do they take longer than metal braces? Not inherently — the tooth movement is driven by the same wires. What varies is your individual case, which is what we assess at the consultation. Can anyone have clear braces? Most patients can. For some bites the forces involved make metal the more sensible choice on certain teeth, which is a judgement we make when we examine you rather than something that can be answered in advance. Are they the same as Invisalign? No. Clear braces are fixed to your teeth and stay on for the whole treatment. Invisalign uses removable clear trays — a different treatment, which we cover on its own page. ## The other types of braces Which one suits you depends on your bite, your treatment time and how visible you want the braces to be. Free consultation with a free digital panoramic X-ray. Treatments # Invisalign A clear, modern approach to straightening teeth using a series of removable aligners instead of metal braces. - Clear and removable - 6 to 18 months - Free consultation The Clear Alternative ## What is Invisalign? Many adults and older teens want to improve their smiles without traditional metal braces. Invisalign offers a discreet alternative. Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners to move teeth gradually. Benefits may include: - Discreet treatment option - Treatment length varies by case ## Invisalign treatment overview We show panoramic and cephalometric X-rays and digital simulations, so you can see what treatment will do before it starts. 1 ### Impressions and digital scan During the first step, the dentist will take impressions of your teeth and digitize them. 2 ### Your treatment is mapped out From these impressions, your doctor can create and manipulate a digital model of your teeth to plan how they will move. 3 ### Wear each set of aligners You wear each set of clear aligners as prescribed, and they move your teeth gradually. 4 ### Change trays every couple of weeks Every couple of weeks, patients change the aligners as prescribed by the dentist. The aligners gradually reposition the teeth little by little until you reach your final result. ## FAQs about Invisalign Here are the questions we’re asked most often. If yours isn’t covered, ask us during your free consultation. What are the benefits of Invisalign? Invisalign clear aligners offer adults and teens a discreet way to straighten their teeth without metal braces. Because the aligners are removable, you can take them out to eat, brush, and floss. For the best results, wear them for the amount of time prescribed by your orthodontist. Do you offer Invisalign for children? No. Orthodontic Options offers Invisalign treatment for adults and teens, not children. How long does treatment last? Although the actual length of time depends on the individual case, usually Invisalign will straighten your smile in 6 to 18 months, often less time than traditional braces. Since the aligners are removable, can I take them out whenever I want? You can remove your aligners for eating, brushing, flossing, and occasional special events, but you should wear them for the number of hours prescribed by your orthodontist. ## Explore other treatments Explore orthodontic treatments for patients of all ages at our Aventura office. Free consultation with a free digital panoramic X-ray. Treatments # Metal Braces The most widely used type of braces, and the one that can correct the widest range of cases — fitted at our Aventura office by four orthodontists, all licensed and certified. - Braces for all ages - Free consultation - Aventura, Florida The classic option ## What are metal braces? Metal braces are commonly made out of stainless steel, which are sometimes combined with nickel titanium or gold if a person is allergic to nickel. Every tooth carries its own small bracket on the outer surface, and one thin archwire threads through the whole arch. The wire wants to return to its own shape, and as it does it applies light, continuous pressure that walks each tooth towards its planned position. Changing the wire at each visit adjusts how much force is applied and where. Because every tooth is gripped individually, this is the most controllable way to move teeth — which is why it still treats cases that other approaches cannot. ## Why patients still choose them Metal braces are the oldest option on this page and they remain the most used one, for reasons that have nothing to do with cost alone. ### Handles the widest range of cases Fixed brackets and wires can move teeth in ways removable trays cannot, which is why metal braces remain the default for complex crowding, rotations and bite correction. ### Nothing to remember to wear Because they are bonded in place, they work every hour of every day. There is no compliance to track — a practical advantage for younger patients. ### Hard-wearing through a long treatment Stainless steel tolerates ordinary eating and daily brushing over a course of treatment that often runs many months. ### Colours if you want them The small elastics that hold the wire come in a range of colours and are changed at each adjustment, so children and teens can pick something new every visit. ## What treatment actually involves From the first appointment to the day the braces come off — and the part afterwards that decides whether the result lasts. 1 ### Free consultation We examine your teeth and bite and take a free digital panoramic X-ray. You leave knowing which options suit your case, what each involves and what it costs. 2 ### Fitting day Each tooth is cleaned and a bracket is bonded to it, then the archwire is placed and secured. You eat softer foods for the first few days while your teeth settle. 3 ### Adjustment visits You come back at set intervals so we can change the wire and check progress. Visits are short, and this is when new elastic colours go on. 4 ### Removal and retainers When the bite is where it should be, the brackets come off and your teeth are polished. A retainer then holds the result — the finished position is only kept if the retainer is worn as directed. ## FAQs about metal braces The questions we are asked most often. Anything not covered here, ask us at your free consultation — it includes a free digital panoramic X-ray. Do metal braces hurt? Having them fitted does not hurt — nothing is drilled and no injection is needed. Teeth usually feel tender for a few days afterwards, and again for a day or so after each adjustment, because they are being moved. Soft food and ordinary pain relief cover it. How long will I be in braces? It depends on what is being corrected and how your teeth respond. We give you an estimate at your free consultation, once we have seen your X-ray and examined your bite, rather than quoting a number before we have looked. What can I not eat? Hard and sticky foods are what break brackets and bend wires — ice, nuts, hard rolls, caramel, chewing gum. Cutting firmer foods such as apples and carrots into pieces rather than biting into them avoids most breakages. Are metal braces obvious? They are visible, though modern brackets are considerably smaller than those most adults remember. If appearance is your main concern, clear/ceramic braces cover the same ground more discreetly. I am allergic to nickel — can I still have braces? Tell us at your consultation. As the practice notes above, stainless steel is sometimes combined with nickel titanium or gold, and there are alternatives for patients with a nickel allergy. ## The other types of braces Which one suits you depends on your bite, your treatment time and how visible you want the braces to be. Treatments # Retainers Maintain your smile after treatment. A retainer helps keep your teeth in their new positions after braces or clear aligner treatment. - Three retainer types - Free consultation - Aventura, Florida ## Types of retainers The right retainer depends on how your teeth moved and how likely they are to shift. Your orthodontist will recommend the best option and explain how long to wear it. ### Essix Essix retainers are clear, removable appliances custom-made from a mold. They fit over the entire dental arch and are similar to clear aligner trays. Patients remove them for meals and put them back in afterward. - Clear and removableNearly invisible when worn. - Remove for mealsRemove your retainer for meals and put it back in afterward. - Covers the entire archHolds every tooth rather than only the front ones. ### Hawley These are the most common types of retainers. They utilize a metal wire that surrounds the anterior teeth and holds them in place, anchored by an acrylic (skin colored) arch that sits in the palate of your mouth. - The traditional designA metal wire across the front teeth on an acrylic arch. - AdjustableYour orthodontist can adjust the wire as your teeth settle. - DurableBuilt to last longer than a clear tray. ### Fixed Retainers Fixed retainers are bonded behind the teeth. They may be recommended when teeth are more likely to shift toward their previous positions after treatment. - Bonded in placeNo removable appliance to remember. - For teeth likely to driftRecommended when the risk of tooth movement is higher. - Requires special cleaningUse floss threaders or an interdental brush to clean beneath the wire. ## Explore other treatments Braces for all ages, at our Aventura office. We are very excited that you have chosen Orthodontic Options as your home for the duration of your treatment. Congratulations on your new braces! During the first few days, your teeth and gums may feel tender, and you may produce more saliva than usual. Some patients also develop temporary irritation on the lips or cheeks. These effects usually improve within a few days. The following tips can help make the transition more comfortable. - Avoid hard and sticky foods - Maintain good oral hygiene - Call us if a bracket comes loose ## A few helpful hints to make it smoother Select a question to view the answer. If your concern is not covered, call us and we’ll talk it through with you. Which foods should I avoid with new braces? Avoid hard and sticky foods, including caramel, taffy, corn chips, nuts, ice, whole apples, gum, candy, pretzels, pizza crust, corn on the cob, popcorn, and crusty bread. Make sure all meats are cut off the bone and fresh fruits and vegetables are cut up into small pieces. The adhesive that we use is very strong; however, excessive force when chewing, particularly when teeth are moving may cause the adhesive and braces to become loose. If you feel a significant amount of resistance when chewing, do not bite harder, ease off on biting pressure. How should I care for my teeth while I have braces? Proper oral hygiene is very important in order to prevent any caries and decalcification. Orthodontic Options has provided you with the proper tools to maintain excellent oral hygiene. What should I do if a bracket comes loose or an archwire begins to poke? There may be times during your active treatment that brackets can come loose and / or the arch wires may begin to poke. Do not panic! Contact our office so that we can make you comfortable. You may try to use wax and/or Tylenol or Ibuprofen for any discomfort. What can I expect in the first few days? What I can expect? - Tenderness of the teeth for the first few days (use Tylenol or Ibuprofen and eat softer foods). - Tenderness of the insides of the lips and cheeks for the first few days (use Tylenol or Ibuprofen, eat softer foods, and apply wax to dry braces or wire ends). - Some mobility of the teeth (normal during tooth movement). - Initial wires are extremely flexible. All precautions are taken to prevent the wire from slipping out of the back bracket (usually caused by hard foods flexing the wire). If any discomfort place wax on the dried last bracket. However, if discomfort continues call the office to clip wire. - Loose braces may occur. Immediate relief can be achieved by placing wax over the bracket.
